A Dead Mans Dream. Lasseter’s Reef Found by Angie Testa and Bill Decarli

A Dead Man’s Dream: Lasseter’s Reef Found
By Angie Testa and Bill Decarli

Since Harold Lasseter’s death in 1931 during his fateful quest for a legendary gold-bearing quartz reef, the whereabouts of "Lasseter’s Reef" have remained a tantalising mystery. Decades of expeditions scoured the west of Alice Springs without success. While some dismissed the tale as one of the era’s greatest hoaxes, others clung to its promise.

In 1991, Vietnam veteran Bill Decarli took a bold new approach: he reversed Lasseter’s map and searched east of Alice Springs. What he discovered was astonishing—landmarks that matched those in Lasseter’s diary, and a gold-bearing quartz reef stretching for many kilometers. This is the story of that remarkable discovery.
