Women of the Goldfields

Women of the Goldfields - Margaret Bull

The history of the Goldfields deals almost exclusively with the exploits of the men with very little mention of the part the women played in building the towns and adding to the national prosperity.

Most of the women who came to the Goldfields in the early days did not come to dig for gold nor to seek adventure. They just followed their men in the hope that they could make a comfortable home, attend to home duties, and rear healthy children. Little did they realise what they were coming to in this vast unknown country, but when faced with this new and difficult life, only a few turned back, the great majority remaining to face up to the rough, inconvenient life ahead of them. They showed that they possessed a pioneering spirit equal to that of any men.
