Yehbut! by Leon Ashton

“Chances are the word Yehbut would be used by every English-speaking adult at least three to four times a day. Until you take notice of the word and how many times a day you and others use it, it goes undetected. That’s one of the reasons for prompting me to write this book on my life. You see, everyone has a story to tell and until something awakens inside of you, most of us never realize just what we have achieved or endured throughout our lifetime. It goes unrecorded and eventually forgotten. And there are a million other stories out there that would be infinitely more interesting than my story.” Leon Ashton.

The Eastern Goldfields Historical Society is pleased to announce that Leon Ashton is the inaugural recipient of the Wilson Publishing Grant 2025 for his publication Yehbut! In 2020, life member Scott Wilson and his wife, Maria, endowed the Society with funds to support grants of up to $1,000.00 for individuals to help with the publication of new Goldfields material.

In 2024, Leon visited the Society to discuss the book he had written about his life, spanning from his upbringing in South Australia to his single life in Kalgoorlie in the 1970s, including his time living in Parkeston and working on the Trans Australia Rail line at Israelite Bay and Maralinga, among other places.

Full of names and places everyone will recognize, this new publication is not to be missed.
