Lonehand. Gold in the Blood. By Joe Houldsworth.
Preface - This is a true Australian adventure story about a spectacular gold discovery in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, and the birth of a new Australian gold mining company, Ramelius Resources. Discoveries like this don't just 'happen' out of the blue, but often start with small, seemingly insignificant events building over the years which ultimately coalesce to precipitate a major event.
The initial insignificant event no doubt, was my upbringing as a kid in the north of England which ultimately led to my part in the discovery of the Wattle Dam Gold Mine in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, and this therefore is also my story.
In April 1966, as a young 'Ten-pound Porn' I embarked on the good ship Fairsky on a six-week voyage, bound for Australia. Arriving in Pon Adelaide, South Australia ironically with only ten pounds in my pocket. I was prepared to embrace the Australian way of life and determined to become an Australian and make my fortune prospecting. I got there in the end, but it took a little longer than I expected. \Xlhat followed was almost 40 years of 'chasing the colours' in some of Australia's most colourful mining localities, often on the bones of my arse. Eventually 'Striking it Rich' and enjoying the fruits of my labours without losing my integrity.
This story is for readers interested in a True-Blue account of Australian Prospecting and Mining, and anyone in the mining and exploration industries and investment community of brokers and analysts. My tale will resonate with likeminded people, young and old. I would like to chink that it may even encourage some wavering youngsters to take the plunge and follow their dreams.
